Re: Maurices Birkin build « Result #1 on Feb 27, 2008, 7:38pm »
Hi Guys I am slowly getting my Birkin Built. I purchased the kit new in May 2007 and work on it when family commitments allow. Current stage of build is all suspension is complete, instruments and switches in, differential installed, all the gaurds are on, body work is painted a Mazda colour called Black Cherry in USA, here in Australia its called Radiant Ebony. The bonnet paint work requires buffing to complete. I have purchased a 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine which will be fitted standard except for extractors and a less restrictive air filter/intake. Gearbox is Ford T9 which will be running standard ratio,s but I am looking at upgrading to a Quaife clubman set of gears better suited to the wieght of a Birkin. The IRS Diff is a 4.44 to 1 mechanical LSD. I am running LED tail lights and 5 3/4" headlights rather than the standard 7". I am just about to start with a modification on the fuel tank to accept the Ford fuel pump, I will be fitting a sump to allow the pump to sit flat against the base of the tank. the sump will include baffles and trapdoors to hopefully cure any fuel starvation problems during cornering. I will also be modifing the Engine sump with Baffles and trapdoors to eliminate oil pressure drops. Any ideas or tips let me know. Cheers Maurice

Hello Akio, I see that you found & posted on the Yahoo Birkins Group. I'm sure that everyone who goes to your site will love it like I did. The yahoo site is a good site because there are some very knowlegable people there. I monitor that site daily and only check the Birkin Sevens site once a week or so. Bye for now, George

Greetings, I think you have me confussed with a hot rodder. I normally drive a little on the aggressive side but I cannot afford any speeding tickets or track time. I try to make all the local car shows. I have a few years on you, I just turned 60, although my wife says I'm not very grown up! I'm sure I get the finger too, but for the other reason Another great site is http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/birkinowners/. I've got a few pictures there in the photo section. My name there is gbshawv8. Ok for now, George

Hi, s4george,
Nice to hear your response, because this list has remained calm for a while. You seem to be a power driver, whereas I am an exceptionally wimpy one (56-year-old), who is contended with a low-power but traditionally easy-to-handle UK Kent engine. In fact, middle-aged woman is occasionally overtaking me on the road, raising her stiff middle finger, "Too slow". Ha,
I hope you set up your home page that includes images of your Zetec Birkin.

Dear prisoner6 I new to the Birkin 7s site. I just got finished with your personal site, loved it! You & I are the same in that we both seem to love driving our cars. I drive mine to work almost ever day to work & on weekends; what a blast! I’ve had mine for two years now. It has a stock Zetec 2.0 with about 145 hp. There are plans in the future to put in new cams, muli port injection & ECU. I hope to get 170-180 hp. That way I can keep up with the Corvettes. Happy motoring, George

After acknowledging the front wheel swing arms gradually showing rust once again since my repair painting in October 2005, I re-splay with Holts wheel paint color (W-4 silver) after masking with papers on December 1 2007. Just like finishing the plastic scale models.

I don't use mine as a daily driver but there are some that do. I have seem pictures of a chap in the uk that took his shopping after returning from a track day. not only did he manage to fit an entire shopping trolley into the car but he had a passenger too.
R120k sound a little much, have a look at joining the TLR and possibly finding one that way. Also have a look at locost.co.za if you are keen to build one. Will cost you less than a R100k
Life with a Birkin? « Result #13 on Oct 18, 2007, 12:05pm »
Hello folks,
I've returned to SA after 16 years in Los Angeles. I've always been tempted to get a 7, but had my $$$ sunk into a turbocharged MX-5 and couldn't justufy it.
Now I'm back, driving a 1991 CitiGolf and looking for a new car.
If I keep the Golfie I could indulge in a Birkin, there's a used one for sale at Birkin for R120k on their site.
My question is, what is life like with a Birkin? Is it a vehicle you can only enjoy in short bursts, or is it a little more palatable than that, enough to make my daily 5k jaunt into Cape Town more fun?

Re: Best source for main componants « Result #16 on Jun 20, 2007, 12:51am »
Not sure what you mean by source. Are you refering to places where you can buy the stuff or types to use. I will try and answer both.
In my car I switched my Kent 1600 motor to a toyota 20v 1600 motor. In my and most others oppinion I beleive this is the best motor for the lotus 7 at this time. the gearbox can be tricky. the favourite is the toyota split box from the old toyota carolla (last RWD model) the 5spd box is the one to get, getting one is a different story. You will also need to find a bellhousing to connect the two another tricky endeavour. An alternate solution for a gearbox is the toyota cressida gearbox. this fits on the the motor but wont easily fit in your chassis if a brikin. it does I belive fit in the locost chassis.
As for the propshaft I had one made up for about R1000.00 at a local propshaft place.
Locating the motor is not to hard we have many importers that import 2nd hand motors from japan. They are generaly good condition and cheap.
You can read elswhere about all the details for a conversion.
